So exactly how many calories do your steps burn? The short answer is that there is no single fixed number. The biggest factor is your body weight; the same 10,000 steps cost different amounts of energy for a 60 kg person and a 90 kg person, because carrying a heavier body takes more energy.

This calculator uses the widely applied MET (metabolic equivalent) method: calories burned depend on walking intensity (MET), your weight and time. To find time, it first multiplies your step count by your stride length to get distance, then divides that distance by your pace speed to get time. This makes the result more personal than a rough "so many calories per step" rule.

Stride Length and Distance

Stride length is roughly 0.41–0.45 times your height; for an average adult it ranges from 0.70 to 0.76 meters. Enter your height and distance is calculated more accurately; leave it blank and an average stride of 0.71 meters is assumed. Because a taller person travels a little farther with each step, they cover more distance — and therefore burn slightly more calories — over the same number of steps.

Why Pace Matters

Walking the same distance faster means a higher intensity (a higher MET) per unit of time, which raises calorie burn. A relaxed walk at a normal pace is less intense than a brisk or fast walk. Tougher conditions — walking uphill, on sand or in snow — also increase expenditure; this calculation is based on an average walk on flat ground.

Are 10,000 Steps Essential?

The "10,000 steps a day" goal began less as a scientific threshold and more as a catchy marketing slogan. Even so, it is a good target bar for regular movement. Research shows that increasing your daily step count brings clear benefits compared with a sedentary lifestyle, and that the benefit does not suddenly cut off at a specific number. In other words, what matters is not hitting a magic figure but reducing time spent sitting and spreading your steps across the day.
